The Penge Community Canteen project started in October 2014, over a pint in a local Penge pub.
We had both worked in the food business. We felt Penge's food scene was too fast food, too junk food, too high street.
We believed there was great home-cooking behind Penge's front doors, in all our various ethnic kitchens, if only we could find a way to share it and promote it.
Along the way, we felt a community canteen could also give local teens some practical work experience, whether into the food business or beyond.
We also hoped to get better home-cooking enjoyed in company in some of the otherwise more isolated corners of our local community.
In short, we wanted to shake up and share out all the good food know-how of our local community, getting it out of private homes and into the public sphere.
Over the last year, we've gathered a Cookbook of home-cooking favourites from across our community.
Starting in 2016 we will be running pop-up nights to promote these dishes.
