Penge CanTeen is very much not a restaurant. It is pretty anti-restaurant. Penge CanTeen is all about sharing great home cooking locally.
That said, I wanted to try out a few more unusual ingredients on our Penge CanTeen members. Like Octopus. This has been a bit of a running gag - maybe too much of a private gag - so I thought I'd try it out on a wider audience. The joke was on me. People loved it.
I also wanted to try some foodier items like crab risotto and bitter leaves with orange. Alongside real home cooking meat and veg - fairly italian style. And on the day it turned out we had wild garlic leaf from a local park, so I swapped out one of the risottos for that. Here's the full menu.
Endive & citrus salad
Crab & fennel risotto
Wild garlic leaf and walnut risotto (instead of Radicchio & red wine risotto) (V)
Greek spiced octopus
Drunken lamb shoulder
Aubergine & feta moussaka (V)
White beans & sage
Chocolate & orange mousse
The feedback is still coming in - more please if you've not yet submitted. But one of the most popular dishes? The octopus. Who'd have thunk it! The good news is that Penge Quality Fish are stocking double-sucker continental octopus frozen, at £9/ kg, which is a good price, and the recipe is now in the newly nascent CookBook section of the CanTeen website...
